The Misemono-Yatai is a mobile project space for contemporary art. It is an artist-run, non-commercial space for artistic self-organization, as well as collective and participatory forms of art creation — free from commercial considerations and the rules of traditional galleries. As a mobile platform, the yatai can be exhibited indoors in partnership with local art institutions or outdoors in the public space, engaging local communities who wouldn’t normally come into contact with contemporary art. The aim of the project is to initiate conversations between people from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, to make the valuable work of art institutions more visible to the public, and of course to facilitate exchange between the Japanese and German art scene at the grassroots level.

In autumn and winter 2023/24, the Misemono-Yatai has been visiting western and central Japan, together with its creator, Berlin-based artist Tatjana Preuss. During this time, she has been meeting and collaborating with local and international artists in order to develop a new exhibition in and events around the yatai. In the summer, the project will travel to Germany and go on display in Berlin.

As part of her artist-in-residency at YUI-PORT in Niigata City, Tatjana is organizing a one-day work-in-progress exhibition event at the cultural center's workshop gallery. In anticipation of the warmer temperatures that will allow for the yatai to be shown outside, visitors are invited to sit down for an indoor picnic featuring Mobile Menu #18 by Berlin project space stay hungry. Fellow residents Passepartout Duo (Nicoletta Favari and Christopher Salvito) will play a sound performance using the musical instruments they have been developing during their stay.

Participating artists: Moe Amano, Ida-Simone Brerup, Jun Iizuka, Tokie Ito, Toyomi Kamegawa, Anna-Sophie Lewerenz, Jak Peters, Misty Scrimgeour, Marisa Seguin, Atsushi Suzuki, Charlotte Whiteside
